DOMINIC QUARRELL ~ TALKING ABOUT DEATH AND DYING (10/06/09)Every culture and society has had a Death System, a set of attitudes and behaviours regarding death, dying, grief etc, that the society agrees with and supports. Attitudes and behaviours not sanctioned by society would be either punished or disapproved of. Our own society is no different.
Importantly these attitudes create the environment, the culture, in which our own experiences of death, dying, old age, grief, mourning and remembrance take place. For example, whatever our own point of view on the subject of euthanasia, what we do has to be carried out within the law. This society has been accused of being in denial of death. Dead bodies are quickly removed, dying people often marginalized and grieving people frequently avoided. On the other hand death provides the meat of much of our entertainment and certain deaths, such as those of Jade Goody, have been widely discussed.
One of the main beliefs characteristic of rational modern western society is that death represents the end of the individual. One consequence of this is that the dying person is seen as a failure rather than as a potential traveller. Many of us choose not to think or talk about death until we have to. The aim of this evening is to encourage the discussion about death and to help us find and create practices to prepare for death and dying that are practical and workable in these modern times.
Tonight we will look at some of the many beliefs societies have applied to death and also look at our own beliefs. We will consider grief, mourning and remembrance and we will examine spiritual attitudes towards death.
